Installing a Borgeson box with a Bergman coupler in a 68 Charger and have a few questions. The box is installed and my questions pertain to coupler install in relation to steering alignment:
1. Pitman arm installed before steering column hooked up correct?
2. I remember reading somewhere there are marks on the shaft and these should be aligned with the coupler. There are no marks on my steering shaft. Are there alignment marks I may be missing?
3. How far forward should the coupler be positioned on the steering box? As far as it will go?
4. Should the coupler be filled with grease?

Thanks in advance
Frank

Hi Frank,
Make sure the box is centred before installing the pitman arm. The instructions that came with the box, and also the bergman coupler, show how to do this. Yes, this is done before installing the coupler to the box.
There are no alignment marks on the borgeson steering shaft for the coupler. The two pin holes are probably the marks you are referring to from the bergman install sheet. These marks indicate that the shaft is centred. One hole at 10 o’clock and the other at 4 o’clock.
The coupler comes down on the box steering shaft enough for the screw to sit in the groove and lock it in place. Once it is all to your liking don’t forget to put loctite on the screw.
The coupler gets grease packed into it before putting on the seal.
Cheers, Glenn

I really like that clamp you’ve got running from the roll-pin hole to hold the coupler cap on. Was considering running safety-wire but this looks much cleaner!

It’s a good piece of gear, and as you said looks nice and clean. Works great when the tabs on the cap just down seem to do their job. Here’s a link if you’re interested. https://www.detroitmuscletechnologi...steering-column-coupler-cover-clamp-retainer/
It’s quite a strong clamp. Cheers.
Glenn.
Thanks for the link! I had some time on my hands because...Corona...so I bent some heavy wire and came up with a knock-off. That coupler cap just wont stay on with the amount of movement due to that shaft offset.

I had the same experience with the pot joint clamp on my 67 Charger and also resorted to the wire clamp retainer.
