I am thinking about putting on some borla units. I have flowmaster 2 chamber 40 series. What are your thoughts interns of performance and sound. Oh it is on a 440 too. Thanks.

If you want Borla, go with Magnaflow instead. The reason I say this is because they are the exact same mufflers, with a different name on them... Same internal design, same packing materials, etc, but Magnaflow has a smaller price tag. A buddy of mine works at a muffler shop, and when I went there and told him I wanted Borlas put on my Scirocco a few years back he showed me the insides of both and told me the same thing... Went with the Magnaflows and they sounded fantastic. On the performance side, they are straight through design, so you really cant get any better than that... Zero back pressure caused by the muffler.

I'd say just do straight pipes but I know how the laws can be in California. I currently do not have mufflers but with tame headers, you'd barely know.

If interested, I can take video.

I don't know if magnaflow is really the same muffler as borla or not, but if they are th same, it is an awesome sound. I have borla's on my 512. They are sweet!

I run Flowmaster 30 series mufflers 3.5" inlet/outlet. They are single chamber and are loouuudddd! If you don't mind some drone, but want everyone who is asleep, driving, and nowhere near you to hear you coming, they are for you. Of course if your engine is mildly built you may want to opt for the smaller 30 series muffler size 2.5" or so.
Also, If you can, don't weld on your mufflers. That way you can change them if you don't like the sound without taking them to a shop.

Laz, what series borla do you run? American I wish I could run that, but even with a tame header I would bring to much heat from the ticket happy police in my area!

Ive always loved the sound of flowmasters on an american V8 but if you want a different sound and less drone check out dynomaxx as well they have a straight through design on there ultra flo either oval or round plus they also offer their bullet one as well. I had a 4" round on my srt4 with a big turbo and at idle and cruz a good deep tone but when you get on it it got loud

I used the Borla XS. Here is a noise db comparison of the major performance mufflers. Th Flowtech Warlock, Basani Real Street, Hooker MaxFlow and Borla XS were all within less than 1 hp different on the Dyno. The Magnaflow was within 1.5 hp(on a 375 hp ford) of the leader in hp performance and rounded out the top five, but on the noise side of it all, the Borla XS won hands down with the Borla XR1 not doing as well. That is why I chose it and it has pleased me well. Awesome sound and impressive on a 512 IMO. I like a deep growl, but I hate notice just for the sake of it. Lol. Btw, a few points one way may not sound like much in a db test, but considering there is only 4 or 5 db different than some mufflers to straight pipes, a few db is definately noticeable. Lol

I'm a straight pipe guy and you can change the sound of straights by installing a 'muffler' of sorts by using a larger size pipe in place of the muffler but only with small crimps in the pipe. The longer that this pipe is and the more crimps, the quieter it gets and since the boundary layer flow is slow along the edges of the pipe, the crimps do not effectively slow down the flow. In states that do a visual of your exhaust system will usually, the inspector will scratch his head because it looks different but yet, resembles a muffler. States that checks with a db meter, well, in most states, all the others will be close to the limit but I think most states recognize 95 db as the limit. You would have to check your state.
