I burnt the fusible link trying to get the ammeter reconnected. Now it's gonna stay bypassed. I'm done with it. Now I can't get the wire out of the bulkhead connector. I hate to bugger it up. I know there is a release tab somewhere. Anyone done this before?
 
You need a special tool, they make the cheap round ones thar can be bought at any auto parts store. Or if you have a very small screwdriver you can sometimes get them out.
On each terminal there is a tab that sticks out from the connector that locks it into the housing.
If you zoom in to the one pic youll see the tab sticking up, the same on the females.

Got it, but destroyed the pin. On my way to O'Reily's to get a new fusible link and spade connector.
 
I did. It was when I was reconnecting it.

Now I need to find the damned spade connector.
 
I do believe you are on to something. Should have left well enough alone. I just never learn.

As mentioned on several threads latelly.. mantenience mantenience mantenience. Every point must be checked. Ammeters must be isolated on both sides of cluster housings, and usually any of their isolators can be burnt ( if not both ). After 40 years of abuse anything can fail as a worn tire can blown ( and won't be the tire's fault )

I am sure that was the problem Nacho. The insulator under the stud mount nuts was deteriorating so I made a new one. Obviously, something was still making contact. Not knowing what is inside the gauge, I don't know it was there or where the studs come through the back side, but something shorted. Working on my back and under the dash, visibility & space is limited. Hopefully, the fusible link did it's job and that is the only problem and I'll have her back up and running in a few days. I thought it would be nice to have the ammeter working, but can live without it. The volt meter will suffice just fine.
 
Electricity is like any other part of the car, must be checked and restored from end to end on every detail. They get damaged and stressed like an engine

If you take care of every bushing on the front end, then make the same about electricity.

Stop under estimate the electricity and everyone of the related parts to say later is a "piece of ****"

Inside of the housing there is ANOTHER one. ( between gauge itself and housing )
That's kind of what I suspected Nacho, and I think that may have been the problem. When I tightened down the outboard stud, it didn't seem to be perpendicular. I thought that was a little odd. Enough so that I loosened and reset it to no avail, and then just shrugged it off. Probably better it happened in the garage as opposed to on the Power Tour.
 
The connectors arrived Thursday. Installed it Friday. Woke her up from hibernation on Saturday and all is well.
