Good Morning everyone,
Couple of questions....
having issue with lifters failing in my 440.
the cam im running is a comp cam 23-712-9.
Lifters are 8921
Anyone use these? Are you having same issue?

Thinking of switching to Comp hydraulic flat tappet duration 292/292 lift 501/501
Anyone use these?
How do they compare to each other?
Just looking for some opinions.

Thanks
DJ

All I can tell you is I went from a 292 509 to a grind close to yours and had nothing but lifter trouble...heads were set up by a well known source (cant think of name) did everything the way I have for years...still not luck....Im going back to something not so straight up straight down.... just my experience...good luck

I had 2 sets of Comp Hyd lifters that I had trouble with, switched to solid lifters and put it behind me. I used Comps solid lifters since they were willing to make it right and so far so good.

Hey DJ,

I've went through about five different camshafts in the course of four years. What I've noticed is that the faster ramp-rate profiles of the newer flat tappet camshafts from Lunati and Comp, seem to wear out the valvetrain exponentially quicker in comparison to the older grinds. I ran an MP 509 for quite sometime on the street, absolutely no issues with wear, I actually sold it after 5-6k miles and it looked fairly new. The last hydraulic camshaft we had in this engine was a comp XL285HL with relatively low-miles, maybe 300-500 total, and it was already starting to wipe a lobe when pulled. To put this in perspective, I had well over three times the street miles on my last MP 590 (272 @ .050/106 LSA) and it was in far better condition.. Honestly, just because it's newer doesn't mean it's relatively better. You may make some additional power with a faster ramp-rate, but you'll go through lifters/cams quicker than oil if it's a street driven car. I would just go the solid lifter route personally, stick in an MP 528 (stock iron heads) or MP 557 (aluminum heads), and find a NOS set of crane/isky iron adjustable rockers. That's a fairly bullet proof combination that will perform well and is fairly inexpensive.

i have an Engle K65 solid in the 440 in my 65 coronet. been running on it since 2003; 16,000+ miles. the quicker the ramps, the quicker the failure; especially with hydraulics.

When I was doing the math on the cam that I'm useing, Sum6401, the 911 springs recommended were way too stout. It had me worried that those springs would be way too hard on the lifters and cam. After researching different formulas and comparing different springs that are available, I came up with a lighter spring than what was recommended. I haven't fired it up yet but I'm thinking some of these outfits are just throwing parts at these combos without doing the math. I'll have to wait and see...

Need to run Mobil 1 5W/30 with high volume pump. Outstanding PSI value over 117k, One of the best oils out there regardless of big brand names. Guys--read the oil testing done by a guy called "rat540" on internet. He tested over 150 oils in PSI values and you may be surprised. Some of the super expensive oils are inferior. Mobil 1 5w30 and 10w 30 were near top of list. Zinc addition is an old wives tale and many of the oils when you add a zince additive -it makes them lubricate and perform much less as it upsets the oils chemistry.
Look it up and take a look on your own. I will now only buy Mobil 1 5w30 for my 440 or Quaker State -gold bottle--Synthetic. They kick butt.

What I left out--Junk oils from his list may be causing or assisting in premature lifter and cam failures. Too much zinc added actually wears things out quicker.

Thank you guys for the response. I think I am going to go with the flat tappets that I listed. Would love to hear from others on the subject.
Thanks,
DJ
