ok every one im starting a new post to a prior prob as of last week. i know i told u about how my cam bolt had come lose and ate away at the cam gear from the pin, but i took cam out and found out that the cam and lifters had chips out of the cam and on the flat spot on the lifters. my ? is what would cause a camshaft to walk rear ward? the lifters were rubbing on the next lobe on the cam shaft and could see chips out of both the lifters and camshaft. is this a defective camshaft or what would cause this?

would this be warantied by the camshaft company? its a comp cams camshaft

The cam walked backwards because the cam gear bolt came loose. The cam walking backwards is a function of how tha cam lobes are ground on a taper to make the lifters spin. With nothing to hold it in place, it went backwards. Time for a new camshaft and lifters. It will not be a warranty issue because it was not a defect.

this whole thing ruined my engine now i have to go through it now with the cam bearings whiped and dont know if metal whent into the rods or mains

they never used loc tite from the factory somthing caused this bolt to come lose now im beyond pissed

Sorry man! That really bites, but like the rest above said, it is really hard to prove at this point... You could try talking to Comp cam. They are a stand up company, but I feel your pain. I had a lobe go south on me less then 5000 miles in and it just sucked... Everything had to come out too.

It sounds like you have a single bolt cam. Did you use the factory belleville washer under the cam bolt? If you used a plain flat washer that could explain why it loosened up. I'm sorry to hear about your trouble and know exactly how pissed you are this happened (wouldn't wish it on anyone) but it would be impossible to prove as a warranty issue.

When you replace the cam and gears use the correct bolt and washer as they are designed to stay tight
the worst thing you could use is a grade 8 bolt as its rate of expansion does not match
if you do not have factory OE bolt order one with the washer

That's right, the factory didn't use Loc-tite but it's very cheap insurance and all you need is a dab on clean threads.

I always use loctite on the cam bolt.

It's not so much the rate of expansion of the grade 8 vs. grade 5 bolt but rather the lack of proper stretch of the grade 8 at the grade 5 torque spec.

the grade 8 bolt will compress the clamped material when hot and become loose when cold

but you are right if a bolt always come loose use a smaller bolt so you get the bolt to yield or stretch

Best defense is to get a three bolt instead of one

ok guys up date on my engine i got it all torn aparty now heres what i found but crank is ok but all bearings r toast due to the meatal from cam shaft n timming gear from bolt coming loose Image077.jpgImage076.jpgImage075.jpgImage074.jpg

Sorry to hear your having all of these problems, Whats next for you?

I once had a cam bolt come loose on a Racer Brown cam. Bent 6 valves is all that happened. Now I always use loc tite, and torque it to 40 ft lbs. No more probs. Didn't realize that washer was designed to stay tight. Is that the one thats flat on one side, and curved on the other or bolt head side? Thanks.

id be lying if I said I wasn't second guessing mine now after seeing this thread lol

took it to the machine shop and they said they could pollish crank. need 1 new piston the rest should be able to be saved, they may need to blast them, just a honing. heads will be fine

Make sure they don't blast the piston skirts. Hopefully, they know that.

Because the piston skirt rides in the bore to give the piston support. Also they are ribbed to retain oil. If the skirts are blasted, that will change their surface and possibly even the clearance. It's just something you don't do.

This hole mess, looks like you spun a cam bearing, this will cause the oil gallys not to get oil to the top end puting alot of pressure on the cam to turn it loosened the bolt , how much oil pressure did you have, I had a cam bearing turn on me, I by passed 1 galley and ran an oil line to both valve covers and it's still running today, plenty of oil pressure, but when the bearing spins alittle, it cuts off that oil galley, check them before you put the engine together
