Can I Swap 8.75 Yokes?

I'm in the process of swapping rear chunks in my 8.75 rear and snapped one of the u joint bolts off in the yoke :eek:ops:. Can I swap the yoke from the old chunk? Both are 489 cases the old one is a 7290 the new one is a 7260, the previous owner used a conversion U Joint. Would I need a new crush sleeve? and could I do it in the car?

Or would it be better to drill it out and tap it for a larger bolt?

Why change the pinion, pull the yoke off and either drill it out for through U straps or replace the yoke for the same as you have.

I suggest try using an easy out to get the broken bolt out cause the 489 case has a crush sleeve and it will be difficult to get it right back spot on, unless there is a crush sleeve eliminator (ie, spacer with shims) in place.

Sorry, your right, I meant can I swop just the yoke without having to mess with how the rear end is set up? Is it as simple as taking off the old yoke and replacing it with the other yoke?

I would do my best to do what 5.7 suggested first. soak it real good with penetrating fluid, center punch it and drill it out enough to get an easy out in it. Use a little heat if you need to, it may have been installed with loctite.

Yes it is, but you still have the crush sleeve to contend with. Now people have done it in the past with now ill effects, maybe you'll get lucky too.

If I were to order a new crush sleeve, is it just a matter of torquing to spec?
or is there a bit more too it. Thanks for all the help I'm pretty green when it comes to rearends.

You need to measure the pre load with a torque meter at inch pounds.

take your time and remove the bolt, and next time keep in mind it only needs 15 ft lbs not as tight as you can make it.
If you can't get it out, drill it thru and use a nut and bolt

Thanks everyone, looks like getting the bolt out is my best bet.
