Hello. I have a 727 torqueflite stock rebuild that I am ready to add tranny fluid too. I went out and bought ATF+4 and just realized that when I filled the converter 5 yrs ago someone told me to add dexron 3 to it. It says dahmler chrystler right on it. Can i mix the atf+4 with the dexron 3 ? Thanks.

Won't be a problem at all. It also mixes well with vodka. If you mix it with rum, you might get a bit of an after taste.

Seriously, it won't be a problem.

Thanks. I laughed at that one. I was told you could mix the two but have been steered wrong by these auto parts stores around here in the past.

Isn't the +4 synthetic and the III isn't?

ATF+4 will work in place of Dexron III....but not the other way around....they are phasing out the III in the next few years anyway

i run type f atf in mine

the plus 4 does not say synthetic on the bottle but i believe they make synthetic. not sure.

Can you drain the converter? A lot of converters have a plug in them. If you can drain it,do it. If not I think the two can be mixed as long as neither is synthetic.

You can even mix the synthetic/non-synthetic with no problem. The problem that is sticking in people's mind is when you're mixing synthetic and non synthetic brake fluids. Synthetic brake fluids have a different boiling point and are not compatible with non synthetic. Remember the Blend motor oils, part synthetic, part conventional. Basically the same thing with tranny fluids

I'd stay away from tranny fluid altogether. As a matter of fact, I'm not a fan of mixing. If it's beer, or wine, vodka, or scotch, just stay the course. Mixing just leads to problems.....

there both synthetic. I am told I should be fine. Thanks everyone.

Are you referring to the old ATF+3? That one is probably phased out by now, ATF+4 is a synthetic oil.

Also from what I've been told, Tranny fluid never ever ever ever ever loses its lubricating qualities, even if it is no longer red or green or whatever color it is. The colour is only there to help you identify the leak on the floor of your garage. Obviously the older the fluid is the more crap and junk that is floating around in it but it's never less oily.

no, I was referring to the Dexron III...our oil supplier says it's gonna go away...just not sure when
