1970 440+6., 9.4-1 compression, stock Magnum cam. Ran fine last year. Had distributor rebuilt by a reliable buddy, got a chance to put it in last fall and no dice. I tried swapping distributors, changed out blown ballast resistor, checked plug wires. Never got her going. Mom got sick and passed away, other issues, so have been too busy to work on it this year. Today I finally got the chance. Filled all three float bowls with fresh fuel. Timing light shows good spark, 10 degrees BTDC cranking. Nothing! Cranks but won't start. Starting fluid didn't help. Not even a sputter or a backfire, nothing. :angry4: Any hints?????

you said timing light shows good spark, have you actually pulled a spark plug out and then inserted it into the plug and sat it on the block then tried firing it over to see if you have spark? sounds like a spark issue to me.

Fresh set of plugs would help. Pull one or two and see if they are soaking wet. I presume they are. I would take them all out and turn the engine over to clear it out. Then put a new set in.

can be one thing ... you put the distributor in 180 degrees out...... you are probably getting backfiring out the exhuast.. because it is top dead center of the exhuast stroke...pull distributor out and turn it 180 and put it back in... try that.....

Lay a spark plug on the valve cover with the boot connected. Turn it over, if no spark then electrical if you have spark then distributor is out or no fuel.

Took the cap off, loosened the distributor hold down bolt, turned the rotor 180 degrees, tightened it down, started first try. Been at least a year since I heard the sweet sound of the 440! I'm going to put the seat back in, check out a few things, and take a shakedown cruise thru the neighborhood tomorrow. I'm a happy camper!

Sounds like we are having the same problem, not starting, ran good, no issues, shut it off, went to start the next day and just cranks, nothing else. Checked the ignition, fuel, even primed with fuel down the carb, nothing. I'm pulling out what little hair I have left.

I am replacing the fuel pump, the one on there is not the original, new fuel filter, new plugs, wires check ok, firing order ok. Carb is new, ballast resistor new, coil new. Checked the Mallory Unilite ignition, works fine.
