Hey everyone, I have a couple of questions about rebuilding my carb.
(71 318)(carter 2bbl)

1. Do I soak the plunger in fuel? I saw a YouTube video saying to do this. The rebuild guide I'm following says to lubricate the top part of it in oil too, but has no mention of soaking it in fuel. do I also do that?

2. Do I need a dashpot? The carb does not have one on it. On both the rebuild guide and the service manual it says it has one. I'm just trying to get it started with this carb, i plan on upgrading to a 4 barrel.

If it is leather, it gets soaked, if it is rubber, just use some assembly grease or oil sparingly. I haven't seen a leather one in decades though...

Thanks! I'm 99% sure it's not leather. Not sure what it's made of.

Thats a leather style pump. I would set it in atf and work it open slightly as the lube works in. Once installed gas takes over as the atf gets washed out.
Thanks. Pic is of the old one i can assure you I would not rebuild it with crusty parts lol. New one is same material just in good condition.

Soak it in oil or just squirt some oil on it. Gas will just evaporate, oil will not.
