hey guys, I'm trying to decide what size carb to go with on my 400. It's a fairly mild motor. The specs are : .060 bore making it roughly a 406, .509/292 purple shaft cam, 440 edelbrock rpm heads, 383 torker RPM intake, and stock steel rockers. It will be mated to a 727.

I've been looking at the Holley street avengers (770cfm or 870cfm). Would that be a good choice and if so which one would beter suit this set up?

Go to Holley's website and use that, I did for both my 383 and 340 and it has worked out good for both.
Though I ended up buying edelbrocks.

I know I've heard horror stories of having to tune Holleys every other day. Are these Street Avengers pretty reliable or will I be under the hood every 100 miles? I found an 870cfm on ebay for 159 bucks that needs a rebuild and I was wondering if it was worth the trouble.

Just a wives tale. I love them!

dam somthing must be wrong with sumones tuning I have had a 3310-1 (780) on a car for 9yrs. and havent did any thing to it......Artie

Personally I don't think you need any more than 650-700 CFM. If you want the new Holley I'd go with the 670. I have an Edelbrock 750 on my 440 and it runs great!

Whats your stall and gear ratio as well as intended useage?

I'd run a slightly smaller carb for street, a bigger one for the track. IMO, a 750 cfm carb would be best for both.

I'd go with Edelbrock 750 Performer electric choke. Easy to jet if you tune it, but they run great out of the box.

:3gears: I agree

Holley's seem to be hit or miss, but I like Edelbrock the best. Easy to tune and reliable.

Good old 4779 Holley 750 DP. Very versatile carb. You didn't mention what converter you will be using. That 509 cam really needs a lot of stall in a 383. Anything less than 3000 it will be a dog off the line. Really should have 4000+

I havent gotten the converter yet but from my research, a 3500 seems to be the ticket. and rumblefish360, as of now i have a 8 3/4 i got out of a truck that has a 3.23 ratio. This car will be a cruiser with a few stoplight to stoplight runs. I have a cfm app on my iphone that says i should run 750. I just felt like that would be a little small, then again, this is my first big block build.

I think I will go with like a 750 or 770. I'm still on the fence between an Edelbrock or Holley. I am running a single plane intake and I want it all to fit under a bulge hood and I would have to get an adapter to run the Edelbrock. Would this be an issue or am I worrying about nothing?
