So when I barely put any slight pressure on the throttle the RPM goes from 900 idle to 1500 fast idle. I mean moving the gas pedal 1/4 inch. The carb is an Edelbrock 1407. When it is hot I tried pushing the choke shut with the throttle part open, the choke didn't move. Also, for what ever reason my 727 manual valve body trans does not have 1st gear as long as it is in this fast idle state. The shifter moves from 2nd to 1st or 1st to 2nd but it stays in 2nd gear as long as it is at this faster idle. There is no kick down installed anymore. 3 speed with JW Performance with performance kits/bands installed. 2500 stall converter

Your trans probably has a NON-Rear Band Apply type Manual Valve body, they won't let it go back into 1st, also maybe above idle so you don't grenade the over-running clutch/sprag, by over revving it by down shifting, my best wild *** guess anyway... Sounds like a vacuum leak !! maybe the throttle shaft bushing is worn or some other type vacuum leak, that's just a wild *** guess thou... what kind of choke does it have on it a electric or mechanical ?? the fast idle could be adjusted wrong, again it's just a wild *** guess.........

take a can of carb cleaner spray the carb base and intake manifold also all hoses. any change in rpm.. vacuum issue. also check brake booster hoses and seal. Also spray brake booster from underside of booster near just boot.

I'll have to do the carb cleaner tomorrow. It has a electric choke. I have it so it's not effective and the fast idle is backed clear off.
