Hello gentleman!

I have a 1970 Charger with a 383HP. I am restoring the vehicle to the original Carter AVS Carburetor and have a question about the base to manifold gasket. Unlike the non-original carburetor that came with the car, it is my understanding that the Carter AVS requires a thick mounting gasket. I suppose a thick gasket insulates the carburetor from some of the heat generated by the engine. Using the correct thick gasket would also facilitate the proper fit and function of the factory mechanical choke which I am also re-installing. My question is as follows:
Is this thick gasket used alone or is it used in conjucntion with a thin gasket? The service manual is silent respecting mounting gaskets. Why this is a concern is that upon close examination of the thick gasket, there are brass stud guides on each corner that protrude above the surface of the gasket. To me this seems like a recipe for a huge vacuum leak. Perhaps this guides are quite soft and are going to crush down upon mounting? I certainly do not want to overtighten the carb mounting nuts, as if one side crushed the gasket too much, it could snap off the corner of the carburetor. What a disaster that would be. It is not a defective gasket, as I bought two gaskets from different sources and both are of identical construction.
So you have a better understanding of what I mean, here are some pictures:

That would be correct,if you use the thin gasket the carb base will rest on top of the choke housing, tighten it that way and this is what happens,it will crack the front carb mounting ear.Use only that gasket,it won't leak !

You use just the thick gasket and don't worry about the rounded top of the brass rivet. It will go flat no problem. Not only does the brass rivet hold the two segments of the gasket together but the tube portion of the brass helps to prevent braking the carb base corners because it's stronger than the paper. Most of the force when tightening the carb is applied to the outermost corners, directly under the nut, so you would want some extra support there, otherwise you would just keep tightening and never get a solid feel. Since the brass is directly under the nut you can put quite a bit of force and not break anything. Breakage only occurs if you are supporting the carb somewhere between the studs and close the gap under the nut.

Hello Gentleman!

Thank you all for the help and advise. The carb is now successfully mounted!

:hello2:

You just found out the brass inserts work like a crush sleeve and help keep the nuts tight
