I need a center section from a 8 3/4 Sure-Grip rear end with 3:23 gear ratio. A friend has one I can have but he's not sure if it's a Sure-Grip or Open rear end. Is there any way to tell from markings ? Does anyone have a picture
of them side by side (Sure-Grip and Open) ?
Tks in advanced

Open is just a group of spider gears and a cross pin, sure grip clutch or cone an enclosed unit. Easy to tell visually...

If you have the pumpkin out of the rearend housing......
If you can see spider gears, it's open
If you see springs, it a cone style sure grip.
If it's fully enclosed looking, it's a clutch style sure grip.
A 3.23 is likely an open, tho there were certainly sg's. A 3.55 or 3.91 would almost have to be a sg.
