I'm converting from a column shifted 727 to a console shifter, and I have a question about how the linkages connect to the tranny's shift lever.
The column shifter linkage goes through the tranny's shift lever from above and is held in place with what looks like a rubber grommet. The console shifter's link bar goes through the shift lever from below and is held in place with a cotter pin.
I removed the column shifter link bar, but with the grommet in place, the connector on the console shifter link bar isn't long enough to go through the grommet and have enough room on the other side for me to access the hole for the cotter key.
So, my question is do I have to cut off the grommet to install the console linkage? I wanted to check since once the grommet is gone I can't reinstall the column linkage if something goes wrong.
