i tried a search and came up blank. so excuse the n.f.c. , this is my first car to work on . i have a 64 44o polara w/ 318 poly wieland intake and 750 cfm edelbrock 4 barrel,3" dual pipes off stock manifolds(headers soon coming), unknown cam.. the car seems to have more in the power band, but it up shifts @ 2600 rpm . what do i research about changing it. any suggestions.

If it's upshifting at 2600 floored, then your kick down linkage isn't right. Do you have a repair manual for your car? Even a old Motor's Auto Repair manual should have the directions needed to do that but basically, the kick down lever is supposed to move exactly at the same time the throttle does and it should also have a spring on it to keep it all the way forward when the throttle is closed. The lever (on the trans) should not bottom out before the throttle is wide open either....

I adjust the throttle pressure arm so it's at full stop when the carb is at WOT. You can always back down from there but this seems to work well.

By the way, 750 CFM is a bit much for a 318, unless it's built for high RPM power. 500-600 CFM is plenty for a stock to mild engine.

Check out your governor too. Located in the tail shaft, the stock one looks like just a cylinder of steel. The HP version looks more like a spool that thread goes on, has an indentation in it that reduces weight. That also controls the upshift points. In the past, I've taken a stock weight and machined it down to the spool shape by chucking it up in a drill and using a file on it while the drill spins. It may not be the exact weight of the factory governor, but it will work with patience.

Just a quick web search gave me this article, there's a good pic of the different governors on there. http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/...hift_speeds_on_the_727_torqueflite/index.html

With the Weiand intake and the aftermarket carb, I'm sure the kickdown linkage is way out of whack and before doing anything else, that needs to be addressed. Once that's right, then playing with the governor can be done if shift points want to be adjusted....and I also agree with the carb being on the big side. The kickdown controls pressure in the transmission and if that's not right, your trans isn't long for this world. If you don't want to mess with the rods etc, you can check with LoKar for a cable kickdown setup that will work with your car but first off, you really need to get that squared away BEFORE you do anything else. The transmission is shifting early because it's thinking there's light throttle when it's floored and it does not have the correct pressures for firm shifts.
