Hoping you guys may have some insight.

When I barely push down on the clutch pedal you can hear a slight grinding noise. It goes away when you push the pedal further down. Noticed it while sitting in neutral and warming it up in from sitting about 6 weeks. Anything to worry about??

It's possible the thow-out bearing or pilot bushing in the crankshaft.

Either one considered a major to do or can they wait? My first manual car....

Either one you will need to pull the trans to get to them. My guess, would be the thow-out bearing that slides on the trans input shaft. If it was the pilot bearing it would make noise all the time, but this is just a wild guess. I would keep an eye on it, if it constantly makes noise then I would pull it.

Will it get louder or do anything else when it is about ready to go? What will it ultimately do if it fails? No clutch???? I have other projects right now and would like to think this is not a big deal that needs immediate attention.

Lightly pushing the pedal just past free play could mean the TO bearing is skidding and bouncing on the pressure plate fingers. If no noise as you continue to push the pedal to the floor then I'd say your TO bearing is fine and you have nothing to worry about.

Thanks. That is how it is. As you continue to push, the noise goes away. The guy who owned the car before raced it so he may have changed some things out from stock. I've had the car for about 7 months now. I don't feel anything off with driving and shifting. You have to push it in slower than normal to hear it so probably was always there and I never noticed it.

+1

Had this exact thing happen to me on my Muncie 4spd Chevy. The one time I took it to a shop instead of changing it myself the shop guy swapped out my pedal push rod that goes to the throw out bearing for a longer one. It made that sound from day one after that after things would warm up in stop and go driving. The guy argued with me for a week and so did his off site tranny specialist but no matter what they did they couldn't figure it out. I told them a dozen times to put the old pedal push rod back. They finally did and the issue went away and everything ran fine after that. That noise and bad pedal feel sure is annoying!
