Apologies for asking an A body question as we have one of these in the shop now and have sent the 70 charger off to paint. I'm not a member of an A body forum so I hope someone can help.

Working on a 72 Duster 340. Can someone tell me where the clutch return spring hooks on as it comes forward from the fork? The clutch fork has a slot and a hole next to it and I can see by diagrams that the long strand of the spring hooks in there but I cannot see where to hook the other end of the spring as it stretches forward.? Somewhere near the starter? Maybe there's a bracket or tab missing?

This car came to us with the z bar bushings worn out and no clutch rods hooked up.

I'd welcome any advise...thank you... John

No problem. The front of the clutch fork return spring attaches to an extra "bolt hole looking hole" on the bellhousing "sort of" near the starter. It will go in the hole that is the farthest down & outermost driver's corner of the bellhousing. When in doubt.... attach it somewhere so that the spring is in pretty much of a straight line holding the clutch fork forward. It's been a long time since I ran a stock bellhousing.... so maybe there's just a "notch" in a stock one. Just attach the spring to the notch in the clutch fork, pull the spring forward & horizontal, and look for someplace to attach it about 3" further forward (so you have to stretch the spring pretty hard) and hook it up there. You'll find the spot.

Ok...a little followup on that return spring as I've been away from it. I located the hole in the fork and hooked up the small spring to it and pulled it forward and hooked it in the little hole in the bellhousing near the starter. That worked.

I set the clutch freeplay to about an inch and a half or maybe a tad less. The issue I'm having is that when I press down on the clutch pedal to check freeplay the clutch stays at that bottom of the freeplay. I have to manually have to pull the pedal up to the stop as if it needs a spring of some sort under the dash or something.

I know it has an overcenter spring and I can feel that working when I push it down to the floor.

So is there supposed to be another spring hooking into the linkage underneath and pulling it forward other than the small one that came with the rod / spring/ bushing kit?

I also read that with a diaphragm clutch the over center spring should be removed??? as these were initially installed for a borg/beck finger style clutch?

I guess i'll post this over on the forabodiesonly forum as well for opinions.

Appreciate the help. thanks...John
