Has anybody put an aftermarket shifter into a car with the stock console leaving the console there an removing the stock shifter and putting the aftermarket shifter inplace. please post pics and tell of any modifications. My car is a 68 Dart GT. thanks. Eddie

I didn't do it, but I have seen it done, The car was a 69 Dart Swinger, they used a B&M cable shifter and mounted it on a custom fabricated bracket to raise it to the need level of the factory console, it worked well and didn't look bad at all.................. I will ask and see if they have pictures of it, but the car was sold about 5 years ago.

Console shifter

I put one (Hurst, of course) in a 1969 Coronet R/T. Never as smooth as I wanted, but FAR superior to the factory unit!!

I am working with an automatic. I want to see about putting an aftermarket shifter in car and want to see which ones look the best and are the easiest to put into the stock console area.

I have never understood the facination with an aftermarket shifter for an automatic. The factory shifters work just fine. It's not like it makes it shift any faster and if you "miss a gear" you should just give it up.
If you want to spend some money where it will do some good work the valve body over and get a good convertor for your engine application.

I think a lot of people do this just to get a ratchet shifter to prevent missed shifts, when they shift Automatics manually,

Chrysler slap stiks did the same thing,

but what I wonder is why would anybody want to shift an Automatic like that. (unless it has a manual valve body and has to be manually shifted)

I always left them in "D" and let 'em eat, it know when it wants and needs to shift, I let an Automatic do what it is designed to do, It will improve consistency when it shifts it's self.

Anybody that misses a shift, shifting an automatic manually should have there driver's license revoked.

May be if they weren't text messaging and sucking on a Big Gulp at the same time they could pay attention when moving that REALLY HARD shifter into the next position.

I wonder if they have a hard time going from reverse to drive after backing out of the garage?:rolling::rolling::rolling:

Back when I had my 69 Bee I actually had some people ask if it was hard to race with the column shift.:black_eye:
:rolling:

No....as hard as it is to believe.......I'm not kidding. So I'd say "No...it's easy. I just put my finger on the handle (sticking out THAT finger as I spoke) and give it a lil push. Easy.:black_eye::black_eye::black_eye::black_eye:

thanks for the replies. The thing with putting an aftermarket shifter in is for bracket racing. You can smack it a little harder for a quicker shift and it wont skip gears which could happen with the stock shifter. My trans does have a shift kit but the better shifter helps out too.

my problem is that the stock shifter is all loose feeling and would like to put some thing in to have a better feel when shifting either on the street or strip and im really dissapointed that all of you chose to be little girls and poke fun instead of help A68dart360 out pretty good to have the billion years of knowledge and insight and then poke fun.

Your loose feeling is not your shifter but rather the linkage and bushings. Replace them and it will likely feel like a new one again.

None of use "girls" were poking fun AT anyone, re-read the post before you make smart *** comment here son.

As far as "slapping the shifter and worrying about missing a shift, does that make it go into gear any faster or shift faster?:bootyshake: Of course not. It is pretty simple to put your hand on the shifter and simply apply the little needed pressure to move from one gear to the next, why would you think you need to "slap" it?

Most of the people that added the aftermarket auto shifters back in the day when these cars were new did it for one of two reasons:

1. Because they thought it looked cool or "racey" and were spending unnecessary money that could have been spent on something that REALLY would have done something for the performance of the car.

2. Serious racers that were converting a manual trans car to an auto and it was cheaper and easier to buy an aftermarket floor shifter than buying and installing a factory auto shifter parts.

Eddie, have a look here

We've ordered one of these but havent received it yet. We (my brother & I) are hoping it will allow us to be able to use the stock shifter more like an aftermarket one, where there is little/less/no danger of shifting manually from one gear to the next, without the risk of going past the one you want, into the next one :head_smack:

I'll let you know how we get on once it's fitted...

For the same reason you stated I put a B&M Quick Silver shifter in an auto console in my 66 Charger. Made a bracket to mount at the correct height, actually used the factory rods and pivots rather than the cable that came with the shifter. It worked out real nice. I could auto shift or put the shifter in ratchet mode when I wanted. Was not hard to do and turned out real nice.

If you put a reverse manual valve body in the trans and file down the gate for the "normal D to 2 detent " then 1st is where D is and 2nd is still second and low is 3rd .
works great on the factory shifter put in D for first then pull the handle back for second "don't push the buton " because u file the detent " then push the thumb buton and back once more and in third . works great my friend had a 440 RR that he got in to the tens pretty regular .
never need a ratchet on amopar IMO.
