Correct alternator

All,

I realized that the alternator that was on my car is a 2 FLD alternator, I am not sure if this is factory for a 68 Hemi GTX, but one of the previous owners converted the car to electronic ignition (not sure if this matters). I am going back to dual points and have the original distributor.

So my question is... IS this the original alternator based on details provided. If not, what is the correct alternator, and/or can I still use this alternator?

The original on your car would have one field terminal and a mechanical regulator on the positive side of the circuit. The two wire (isolated field) alternators used an electronic regulator on the negative side of the circuit. The Isolated field can be wired a couple of ways on the earlier cars. If it is working fine, I would leave it, unless you are wanting the 100% factory look.

I think the original would have had the round back for the round diodes, and only one field connection. That is if your going with the original restored look/function.
The single field connection alternator has to use the older regulator setup that regulates the voltage going to the field because the other field is grounded to the alternator case.
The newer square back alternator has both ends of the field with isolated connectors, so it can be wired and used with the older style or newer style regulator. It just depends on how you wire it.
I think the original alternator only put out like 36-Amps. There are companies that upgrade the output of both types of alternators. I think the mid 1980's square back alternators were around 60-Amps stock?

Thanks for the info, I thought the Hemi cars had 70 Amp alternators. The good news is that this one does work, if I am correct the only thing I need to do is to run one of the FLD wires to a ground source which is how the wiring was setup from the previous owner.
