In your experience what would a reputable transmission shop charge to remove and replace my 727 in a 73 Roadrunner and fix the leak? ( Im working on the assumption it's the front pump seal). It is a big block car.
Thank you in advance

All depends on your local labor rates and the shop. If they are experienced with rear wheel drives they should be able to replace the seal in a few hours tops. But it might not be that seal.

I think anything under 6 hours labor would be a deal. Repair shops see old cars as deep pockets now. Something that was a flat rate 4 hour job back when cars were new is now double just because.

The local guy that I use for some things is $70/hr.

I think if you get out with a replaced seal for under $500 your doing pretty good.

Take to trany shop and reseal and freshen well you have it out
this way you find now what might bite later and only do it once

Shame you don't know anybody - it's a $10 part.

I've pulled my 727 laying on my back with the car up on stands.... if you're physically able and reasonably mechanical, you should be able do it yourself.

Ive done it but Im just getting the point in life where that part of it isnt much fun anymore. Ill take it back to the builder maybe he'll cut me a break on the labor

You mentioned taking it back to the builder - how old is the transmission? Is the builder a transmission mechanic? If so that may be the smartest move. Parts could be a wild card in the cost. When I pulled my transmission apart the bushing area of the hub on the converter was badly worn and probably had enough play that it might never have sealed up with a new seal. Someone on here recently had an experience with a converter area leak that turned out to be a cracked pump housing. In any case going back to the original builder may be your best option.

Its not very old. Maybe 1000 miles. I thought it was dipstick tube but definately coming from inside the bellhouse.

It could also be a groove worn in the converter shaft.

Any chance you have the trans over-filled?

I Dont think so. It leaks when sitting and it gets so low it wont move. I just put enough in to move it into the shop to check it
