My friend is offering my his OEM 906 heads that have been completely refurbished. New valves, springs, ported and polished, everything. Says he has $1500 sunk into all of that work. Does that sound right? That's not what he's asking from me I am just wondering if that's ballpark for that amount of work.

Sounds low to me. I put that in a set 30 years ago.

I didn't know cause I see them for sale pretty much the same for just under $800 and can't tell if someone is taking a bath to clear up space or what.

My 2 cents. If the seller does not have the bill with all the parts and service costs itemized by a known reputable head guy, then you are getting what you pay for, or less.

When it comes to cylinder heads, buyer beware.

This is my one actual friend in the real world. It's legit. He has the paperwork and is giving them to me for $500.

He has a lot of stuff we will be listing here for nyone who wants to grab them at MOPARS in the Park (Minnesota, May) including, I think, a 70 440 block from a Super Bee, so somewhere there is a V Code that wants it.

Sounds good. I've spent $500+ on springs alone (PAC-1326) for sort of big solid roller setup.

If they are complete and fully built with hardened seats, $500 is a good price.

A friend took his 1970 pontiac ram air 4 heads to a shop to be redone, final result $1850. Bronze guides, flat tappet springs, hardened seats, new valves, 6 angle valve job, surfacing, magnfluxed and pressure checked. That was 5 years ago. He had $1500 in the heads before he started. Ouch.

Regardless $500 is a good deal if it is more then a valve job. Dropping $1500 in 906 heads is certainly possible. Generally we have less then a $1000 in most sets of heads. The last few we have put in larger valves instead of new seats. Occasionally we do hardened seats, depends on the application.

If the shop does decent work that is a deal.

Yes, Hardened seats cost because they have to be bored out and installed at the correct height so the
valves are at the right height. Sounds like a good deal from a friend!

He's got a pile of stuff him and his dad have collected over the years. Trying to pick through it and see what will fit for my 383 build. All I have is my OG block and still have to have it tested before I get this project underway.
