Ok I'm new here and new to the forum world. (First posts ever!) so go easy on me if I'm in wrong section or it's been talked about. Trust me I looked

ok I have a 68 charger big block 4speed car that came with factory air. I live in Washington and we don't need ac up here. Or want all that clutter for the mater. Iv found what holes to plug up and the about area for the new heater hose holes will go.(for the non ac box)

my question is: can I "gutt" the ac parts out of my ac box. And just run the heater parts? Making it less headache of finding a new box and putting in new holes?

I am doing the same thing. My car has been on the back burner for a while but that's the plan. I really wont be needing heat or A/C in it. You will have to make some cable improvisations to replace the vacuum controls. I went back & forth on plugging holes or grafting a firewall patch. I pulled the A/C parts out of the box and will cap whats not used.

If you removed the entire AC system I bet you could sell it to someone and have more than enough cash left over to get a standard heater and have more than a few bucks left in your pocket... just an option... If you're into it that far why not get the right parts you need and give someone else an opportunity to get a AC system...

Just cap off the holes and remove the compressor and evaporator. Store it in your garage, and when you do decided to either put it back on or when you sell your car, you will have all the parts.

Totally removing it will do nothing but de-value the car.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

And I'm jealous of your climate. Summer here sucks.

In my case I don't have all the parts. The thing is that you can't just put in a non A/C heater box. The holes in the firewall are in different places. If you filled them or grafted the firewall like I was going to do you could not easily go back if you or a later owner ever want to.

Yes you can gut the AC box and just keep the heater part. This will not devalue the car but do put all the old parts in one place. Just in case. Most of those old parts would have to be replaced anyway to prevent any leaks. If you do gut, when was the last time you replaced the heater core?

I just did this to my car,I left the heater box and heater hoses the same.I removed the compressor and my car was missing the condenser coil already.you will need to get new a pully for the crank and also new brackets for mounting the alternator.my car had a fixed fan on it but I put the original style clutch fan on it so the fan pully needed to be changed also.I bought everything in a kit off of ebay, had both pulleys and the alternator brackets, complete.the steel block bolted to the front of the head where the alternator bolts to gets removed and the bolt goes right in the head.also the tensioner for the a/c set up is no longer needed,I bought a set of water pump housing bolts from mega parts because you will see when you remove the old ones if they are original like mine were you dont want to reuse them.I actually had my a/c heater box restored and it is a/c ready but I really dont want a/c but if I ever want to put it in the under dash is complete,I just wanted to get rid of that big compressor because it isnt getting used, makes the engine compartment look less cluttered.

Don't need ac to dry it out?

Right on guys thanks for all the input. I did already plug up holes. And had my ac box for sale but no hits. And I can't find a used one that doesn't need extensive repair. Money isn't to much of my problem. I'd rather keep the hassle low. So I will just strip the ac box and keep all the parts. The car hasn't been on the road since the 80s sooo I won't be throwing away or selling anything till it's done or ever. Thanks again.
