Whew, after a severe drought of 440 stuff on craigslist for the past couple of months, it looks like the worm is now turning and my effort to put a 440 into my road runner this Spring will be finalized.

In the past month I've gotten:

  • A 1973 440 and 727 transmission complete but missing accessories, plus a MP purple cam and lifter kit for $300
  • A newly rebuilt 1974 850 Thermoquad for $50
  • A set of un-used painted Summit headers for $60
  • An OEM electronic distributor for $25

I also just contacted a guy about a 78 440 block and 727 trans he's asking $250 for. The engine comes with a set of 66 GTX heads, which might be better than the ones on the 73 I bought, so I can buy the engine and tranny, separate them, and sell them for probably more than $250 and essentially get the heads for free. :)

I love craigslist!!! :)

nice finds!! 67 GTX heads? if they are they'll be 915's.

Plus the 73 engine I have had an issue with the #7 rod journal becoming egged', so I would need to have the crank shaft turned. This other engine has (I believe) the same cast crank as the '73, so I might be able to lower the cost of rebuilding my engine if they can just use the '78 shaft and not have to do any machine work to the '73. :)

I have spent lots of time on Craigslist and found LOTS of good deals. So far that includes my 67 post $1800, 66 4 door parts car $650 and my next parts car (not telling yet), my 03 5.7 hemi with 60k miles ($600), BBK shorty headers NEW $200, grill surrounds $100.....I am sure there is more I am forgetting that I have found on there...

I had hoped to find a car with a running 440/727 in it for a good price, but this engine sort of dropped into my lap. :) It's been repainted hemi orange, has a fuel pump block-off plate, black Mopar Performance valve covers, and a mini-starter already on it, so I suspect someone's gone through and modified the guts but I won't know for sure until the speed shop tears it all down. Sure would be nice to find it's been bored .30 over and has 10.5:1 slugs in it. Plus I haven't separated the engine and tranny yet, so there might be a jewel in the torque convertor department too.
