Just went to start ordering parts for the 440. When I went to get the flywheel, I am finding out that a 74 cast crank does do have a deep enough hole to accept the input shaft for a 4 speed trans. The engine came out of a truck with an auto trans. Can a machine shop drill into a crank to get it to accept a input shaft for a 4 speed, or do I have to buy a used crank from 68-70?

yes a machine shop can drill that easy. you will have to provide the ID and depth measurements for them. I don't have any handy at the moment but im sure someone here does.

Get the bushing that fits the input shaft 1st, so the machinist knows what he's working with.

there's more to this than just drilling the crank. there's the matter of balance. cast cranks are externally balanced and the flywheel will need to be balanced for that. if it were me i'd just get a steel crank and neutral balance flywheel. 4spds and cast cranks aren't always a good mix.

You are correct Lew, the engine once we took it apart has an external balancer on it, so I assume that a forged crank is what I need?

i think you'd be happier putting it together the way the factory did. to my knowledge no HP440 4spds had cast cranks. you can always sell the cast crank stuff to an automatic guy.

That was my thinking. I am now trying to find a forged one, I put a "WTB' on the forum to see if anyone has one. I'll see what happens.

something to ask about on any factory forged crank is whether it is drilled for a pilot bushing. some weren't. you will need a different dampner too.

I can live buying a different damper! Just hope I can find one.
