The DMV has a whole new bunch of rules for getting collector plates now. Basically if your car is not stock or very stock appearing no collector plates for you. You have to submit pictures of your engine and all angles of the car to them. So if you have a blown motor, huge tires, etc, anything out of the ordinary they can decline you. And probably keep your money, not sure if they can do that yet lol. I see lots of people submiting pics of similar cars as theirs with the application. Anoughther government rip off, ranks right up there with paying sales tax over and over on a vehicle. You guys all report the actual sales amount dont you lol!

I agree on the paying taxes over and over on a used car, pisses me off. My car falls in the non stock category so no collector plates for me which is BS.

Pa the same way... Antique or classic isint as bad, collectors here you have to have exhaust photos also.. Even with the antique here you have to have the hub-caps on it, if your car is supposed to.,. They wouldn't pass a friends antique truck because the chrome wheels were on it. Taxes, ill leave that alone! its miserable with anything with them here in Pa.

Uh, there's a reason they have "hobby" plates here in Wisconsin. They cost the same and they don't expire. $200 if I remember right.

I just got antique plates for my Ambassador. They were about $150 (can't remember exactly). Didn't have to show a thing. No inspection required. Of course the driving is supposed to be limited.

Russ......You can thank all those clown's putting collector plates on 89' Celebrity wagon's and 84' Oldsmobile Omega's. So many scam artist's applied for collector plates over the past years for cars rolling over that 20 year mark (obviously because no annual registration). Now the state requires a heck of a lot more for collector plates as well as drew a more firm line in between collector and hobbyist.

Wil I did recently see some cars on the road that had no bussiness with colector plates, a ford wagon for one. Last year they didnt care what you plated and they had plates at the office in stock. I want to transfer some plates thats the problem. I think my car can pass for stock with a little trick photography lol. As long as the headers are out of view, but then again back then the dealers sold those for roadrunners so who knows.

here in ontario.ca we have a special plate for older stuff, historic or antique, i forget and it is raining so i not going to look. anyway, they cost 17-19$ yearly and regular plates run 60-70$. 20 years old works with no hassel. but, there are more and more guys putting them on stuff they shouldn't be on. it will eventually screw it for everbody.

Went through the picture and questionaire thing on a couple cars in the last few years.Didnt want to deal with it on the belvedere so i put regular plates on it for the time being.

Wow, cant belive its so hard for most of you guys to get antique tags. I bought my 1965 virginia tags on e-bay, took them to the DMV and paid my $50 fee.........DONE !!

Wish it was that easy and cheap. Youd think that with 6 months of winter weather they would lower the price. Theres a extra fee for everything in WI.

One of the few things I like about living in Michigan, is that the Secretary of State does all the car stuff. They are sharp, and can usually get everything done with no worries. I went to them to try to get my 53 Harley with a 73 engine registered. No drama, all set, clear title! I guess that in 53 they didn't have vins on frames. So the bike is titled by the motor.

I actually had a friend of mine register and get a replacement title for my 68 charger in michigan all because Wi makes it so hard to title a lost title car. All we did was have police man come over and look at the car fill out a simple form and done. Then retitled in wi. Really does wi think all 40 yr old cars are stolen. Guess they never heard of anyone misplacing a title.

I just went through all that at the dmv I got hobbyist plate they dont care how built the car is with them

I registered my Belvedere with collector plates in March of '09 with no problem. She did say if it were modified it should be hobbiest plates. No real difference other than the plate color. Their definition of modified is open to interpretation, though. I think technically, if it has an after market stereo it's modified by the ltter of their rule. I see a lot of collector plates on highly modified vehicles - haven't heard of anyone having any hassles with law enforcement over it, though. I don't think they really care.

Here in MI I got a 10 year Historic plate for $30 without any hassles, photos, or questions asked; just a title.

I would hate to live in one the the states that make the plates harder to get.

I love Florida.
You have 5 options.

I have been thinking about getting an old YOM (Year Of Manufacture) Fl. Plate.

I could get an antique plate but a light blue plate with white letters on a Top Banana with black stripes car is just about as stomach turning as a blue engine with an orange air cleaner on the same car.

The only problem is with those plates (plate) you can only drive to and from shows or to be getting it worked on. At least that's what they told me when I got mine. But, no pictures or hassles. Couldn't believe the State of Michigan would do something that makes sense.

That is correct and I don't drive the car much so they were appropriate for this one.

I consider a gathering of friends an event or show anyhow. MI doing something for the people is hard to get used too! lol
