Hi all

Maybe I'm asking about something that doesnt exist but...

A few years ago, I bought a set of black & yellow california license plates for my 63 Polara, from a company over here in England. They can use a current or old style US license plate blank, and put your own vehicle license number on. These arent striclty legal for use on the road here in the UK, as we have regulations about the height & spacing of the numbers & letters, but unless you get pulled by a cop who's having a particularly bad day, you can usually get away with it!

My question is... does anyone know of a company over there in the US that provides a similar service?

I have a friend who has just bought a 66 GTO and he'd like to get a similar set of Michigan plates in the correct style for '66. Trouble is, the place I got mine from only do a modern style of plate for Michigan.

I dont know the ins & outs of how you go about getting license plates made over there, so maybe regulations prevent you from being able to get plates made in the old style - if that's the case, let me know & I'll call off the wild goose chase!

Thanks, Rob

I brought a few sets from a guy in Florida who did just about every state/year. I'll have to look through my papers for the receipts. I believe he advertised in Hemmings. In the meantime, try this guy. It looks like he has every year for US states in the correct fonts. Let me know www.licenseplates.tv

Custom License plate

There's a guy I found while googling California black and yellow plates, his compny is called Cr8apl8 (create a plate). I don't know anything about him but it sounds like what you're looking for. The plates aren't street legal but could be used for display on your car at a car show. Check it out maybe it will help you out.

I'm still looking for the legal real thing.

We are permitted to use original plates for the year of our car here in NY. NO reproductions or repaints are permitted. You could check that auction site for someone who may have a set in his collection that he is selling.

I have used both licenseplates.tv and Cr8apl8, for myself and for gifts.

Cr8apl8 provided horrible service, piss poor quality, and a cheap look.:cussing:

The .tv folks are pricey, offer fantastic assortments (years and styles), excellent quality and great service.:D

You get what you pay for. I highly recommend the .tv folks.

Thanks for the replies guys, that licenseplates.tv looks to have a good choice of styles :icon_eek:

I wanted to post this pic earlier, but didnt have it to hand when I did my original post...

As you can see, our Polara has 7 digits as that was what cars generally had over here in 63. Some had just 5 or 6 (1 or 2x numbers instead of 3) but they were much less common.
If we had 6 or less, you can see the 'registration mark' (as we call it) would fit in much better with the US size & style of plate. Ho hum

It looks like you CAN enter 7 digits on that site for a custom number, which surprises me, but if my mate has 6, it would look a lot better.

They're not cheap tho :icon_eek:

You can not beat the quality of licenseplates.tv period! Never buy a cheap suit, or cars parts.
