It occurred to me today that you rarely see Chargers, Bees or RRs with custom paint jobs. By that I mean the really blingy candies and flake jobs of the sixties and seventies. It surprises me considering they were so popular back then.

Has anyone got any pics of these cars with those really wild custom paint jobs that were so popular back then?

metalflake is 70'sh. I could see marblezing the stripes. Just the stripes. Or the hood blackout.

Flake, candies, lace, scales, bubbles, smoke, indian blanket, patterns and scallops, leaf, and other stuff were all so cool. Bucky's paint is awesome at that vintage stuff.

The custom paint jobs, now days, are mainly seen on the customs, tuners, custom cycles and sport bikes. And I might add, they can get very expensive these days. The cost of just doing a plain paint job is in the thousands. Add into that a real good artist and all of the expensive custom paints, some costing hundreds of dollars for a pint and the job can cost as much as the vehicle.

I like the "ghost" artworks, especially the ones you cannot see unless you look real close. Hiding striping or flames on a nice paint job can have a cool effect without looking gaudy...

My buddies bike, the most impressive airbrush an custom paint I have seen. Just pure awesome, pics can't even do it justice.

I've always secretly liked the old 70s flake jobs....especially on the vans...

One of the guys on other boards, had a very cool S/S car that was period painted, but now looks like any other big-tire car. I'm thinking about having my buddy do old-school stuff on my 66 hemi-car.

the Daytona in the wind tunnel is owned by a DC.com member still looks like that

That would be cool! Ijmho, but those 70s era paint jobs only look good w/ Crager SS Wheels, or polished Centerlines

That's because Chrysler did such a good job with their factory (HIP) paint and decals that it's difficult to do better.

People always comment about the scoops on my r/t that they haven't ever seen it OR they haven't seen that in years ...I love it

My Mr. Norms '69 Super Bee had a funky World of Wheels 'acid bubble' paint job before it was repainted back to the factory red.

To me, custom paint always ends up looking dated after 10 or so years. The only way to get around this is to go for a period look, like the 70's flake paints or the 50's flame jobs.

There are exceptions, like the air brushed skulls up above. Let's face it, a few things that never get old on bikes... skulls, American flags and tits

I agree HT. A good example is that'flip paint' that was on every ricer about fifteen years ago. The paint that is blue on one angle and becomes green from another. It looked modern for a couple of years but then became as common as a Mustang driver with a walking stick.

I think if you want to go custom you've gotta go old custom. Rods with flames etc.
