Hey guys,

Has anyone built a custom trunk for their cars? I want to box and carpet it like modern cars have. How did you attach it? I was thinking maybe welding some tabs? Any tips would be helpful. Thanks guys!

No need to start welding. You can use velcro tape to stick your inserts to the metal.

I was at a cruise night last month and a Fairlane cruised in and he had customized his trunk (see photos below) with a pair of 10" sub woofers and an amplifier......pretty much what I want to do.......will install my amp in the side next to one of the "sub"....will not have the small speakers in the trunk....his are there because he opens his trunk when parked and he can play music......but anyway a very nice clean look.
TRUNK SUB WOOFER PANELS (10” woofer in a .075 cubic ft. sealed box behind the vinyl panel)
Making 90 degree Bends: (3/4" material)
Use 12 cuts for each bend; 1/4” apart using a thin blade;
Make cuts down to 1/8” from bottom. Fill cuts with glue; Check bend with a square;
Clamp in place and let glue fully dry before using. Then covered with vinyl fabric.
Panels were held in place with heavy duty velcro so they can easily removed and also gave the panels a very clean look.

hope this helps

I'm planning on doing the same thing, at this point in time I only have a rough idea. I was going to make the side walls extend from the tail panel to the trunk hinge bracket, as long as you can get the sides in tight you can fasten the front and rear panels to them. The front of the side panels are a no brainer (trunk hinge brackets) but I really need to look at my car to see what's the best way to attach the panel at the rear (possibly to the taillight hardware)?

Thanks for the help guys! i appreciate. it that trunk looks really nice.

Don't know what body you're doing but I'm in processes of putting trunk panels in my 68 RR.
A guy that's in the business of making and selling the blank ABS panels for Chevys and some Fords, wanted the pattern for 68-70 B-Bodys so he drove from Cleveland to Dayton, Ohio to measure and make templates from my car. Should have the panels soon. Upholstery will be done at a local shop. I'm not going wild with subs and all just a very clean show car look.
BTW these panels require no real attachment, have some flex and are basically a press in fit and come out easy for storage behind them. PM me if you want any more info. I intend to post some pics soon when all is done. Dale

Just got my panels back from the upholstery shop and will have to post them soon, made the panels out of 1/4" plywood and only drilled a few holes under the Dutchmen panel and the trunk lid braces (no holes in the floors).

I've been so busy with the T56 install I haven't even looked at it but will try to take some pics today.

Here's the pics I promised, it's not done yet so I just laid the parts in there for the pics. I need to go around with black paint and touch up the overspray in areas and get it all fastened in. No boom box, just walls that are pleated to match the seats.

For fastening it in I wanted the least amount of screws and holes in the car and no holes in the floor so here's what I did. I made the forward panel so that it bolted to the trunk hinge bracing and to one bracket in the top center of the trunk opening. Then I bent some brackets that get Velcro wrapped around them to hold the side panels in.

The rear panel just bolts to the top like the factory one did and the side panels wedge it in where the bottom can't move. This one get's Velcro as well.

Here's one of the sides, I went ahead and made a storage area in the driver side and the passenger side hides the battery. These got Velcro sewed into the backs to stick to the brackets I made on the front and rear panels.

Sorry about these pics, I've got the car up on jack stands trying to finish putting a tranny in so it's hard to get good pics (that's my battery disconnect key hanging out).

I'm not to thrilled with some of the things the upholstery shop did. He was supposed to make a Velcro flap that coverd the hole under the gas filler neck and instead up removing the storage box and neatly tucking the material under it he sprayed his F'ing glue all over the inside of my freshly painted box and just glued the material to the inside as well (looks terrible):angryfire: I'll go back and repaint it, redo the box opening and clean it up.
