dana 60 modification

Need help modifying a dana 60... Want to take 2" of on both sides
What is the safest way to modify without changing the integrity?

Saw the tubes and weld on new ends is probably the best way but I have one where someone just took out what was needed, beveled the ends and welded it back together. It held up fine running in a car that was going high 10's and was around 3300 lbs.
