I'd like to get a Dana 60 for my 68 'Net at some point and I've been wondering what Dana 60 rear ends I could use other then a 68-70 b-body Dana 60?

Even out side of the standard early B & challanger/Cuda. For example dodge, ford etc trucks? Obviously on 6-8 bolt rears it would need new axles to suit, but are they viable with-in reason?

What jogged this thought was a '05 Dodge dana rear end has come up for sale, and also includes the 4 pot brakes from the front end. Not cheap but they look like a good braking/rear end package. Would an '05 Dodge truck rear end fit?

Thanks in advance!

I just got a 60 from a guy i work with. Its out of a 95 ram 2500. It's going in my 68 charger. Im not looking for original since the car is getting tubbed. Compared to an original, the case does not have a place to put a pinion snubber and the one i got has provisions for an abs speed sensor that reads a tone wheel mounted to the ring gear. I will have to look tomorrow at newer trucks. They may have moved the speed sensors to each rear wheel eliminating the one mounted in the diff housing. But yeah, other than that, the internals are the same. Dana is a dana.

took a Dana from a 2002 Dodge Ram and it now sits in my 70 Coronet. With a little work the rear was a great choice.

The tone ring in a 97 at least is made into the carrier and doesn't come off. It's there, period unless you change out the complete carrier. Don't know about the newer ones. Also, pickup rears are usually too wide for the 68-70 cars...

Truck rears are thicker tubes. No Pinion snubber mount. You can use caltracs. It would be easier to buy a Strange 60, or install a 9 inch ford housing. Remember the Ford engages three teeth on the ring gear. The end bearings are larger. I have 2 orginal dana here for sale, but it is only for a period correct hemi car. Other wise it is not necessary to spend the extra cost. You can get a S60 from Strange for 1800.00

Several years ago I bought 25 Ford 3/4 ton '501' Dana 60 housings...total cost was under 500 bucks. The tubes were the same thickness but were 2 3/4" diameter but that didn't hurt a thing. I have my own small machine shop so installing new Mopar type bearing housings wasn't a problem. They were built for the lighter duty truck package and had the semi-floating axle setup but had the 6 bolt flanges. No one wanted that so, off they came. Had to narrow them to fit a car tho and cut off the spring pads and weld on new ones on the bottom instead of the top. Truck springs bolt to the top of the tubes whereas cars bolt underneath the tube.....

Agreed , there are some dana 60 housing used in ford truck applications that have the same tube diamater as the car dana 60 and it makes replacing the ends with mopar style ends easier. You want have the pinion snubber mount but depending on what suspension you use you may not need it. Housing will need to be shortened, ends changed out, axles orderd and replaced, and spring perches moved. Or as stated purchase a S60 from strange and not have to worry with it.

Wow, Thanks for all the info guys, that's exactly what I was after!

68-70 b-body Dana's a few and far between down here (and pricey), which is why I was looking into other options.

I think I may have to look into getting an S60 then, even with sea freight it would probably work out a bit cheaper then the truck dana with necessary modifications (some I would do myself, but most, like shortening, would have to be farmed out).

The Truck package would be a good buy if I wanted to go the 'pro-street' look with big brakes, but I really want to run 15/16"s with raised white lettered tyres for that more period look and they wont fit over those big brakes.

Thanks again guys!

Strange or moser are options, but you will drop 2500 bucks by the time its all said and done. I got lucky on mine. The guy thought it was a 70 and advertised it as such and nobody wanted it. He offered it to me for free just to get it out of his way. I am not one to pass on free anything and was not opposed to using a 70 in my car so i said sure, i will take it. Once we got it in the back of my tuck, i saw the 60 on it. Lucky me! Free dana 60. 4.10 gears. Limited slip. The best part is it came out of a truck with 2000 miles on it. It was replaced under warranty for a vibration issue. The rear was not the problem. So make that a basically brand new dana for free.
This is not the norm i know, but usually you can get ones out of a truck pretty cheap. And you should be able to have it cut down and set up for way less than the price of a new moser or strange.

I have a total of 800.00 invested in my Dana. Mopar magazine had an article going back about 5 years, on this exact subject. Yes there are alot of places selling complete rear packages that would look great under any car. If you don't have the extra cash to buy a Dana, complete for the car, then this is a great option. Purchased the rear from a local junk yard, picked up new bearings, seals, axles, paid 150.00 to have the rear shortened. I mounted the pinion snubber to the body of the car.Welded the spring saddles to the rear, Spring shop made new u -bolts for the larger tube size.

in 2002 or 03?? dodge started using aam10.5 in 2500 models & 11.5 3500 models rearends they look like dana's but the carriers arent interchangable plus the posi units that come in them are total crap which stop working for no reason which my local dealer even told me that they had new trucks off the trailer that were junk & can't rebuilt.

That's all I charge to narrow one and weld on new bearing housings.....25 extra for welding on the spring pads and I recommend welding the pads on first then the bearing housings. I tack everything together, take final measurements and then weld up the pads. Check the ends for straight and then weld them up.

Cranky you are a a rare breed. I see you have the right tools to do the job. The first time I have seen in along time. Plus you weld the perches first. You are a real Mopar man. I am glad we have guys like you here! Tell me something what angle do you weld the perches onto the housing?

Steve

The angle depends on the car it's going in and what the customer wants. I try to get all the info I can including suspension height before final welding. With a couple, the housing was bolted in for a final check....

I think the Glasses, the WD40, The 3# maul, The Folgers Parts container and the two BIC lighters are exactly the correct tools for this job. No, seriously. Nice shots of how to get it done without spending a fortune. thanks for the picts...

LOL! The maul is for tapping the bar in and the WD40 helps with that...and the glasses....well, I ain't no spring chicken anymore! And the lighters were probably there because one is for the BBQ pit (which is back there too) and the other is for lighting off the spray from a can of brake wash :D Gots lots of dirt daubers and wasps around here and it's cheaper and more fun than using wasp/hornet spray. And you're welcome :headbang:

I got a 25.00 housing from one of the local shopper ads and had Dutchman narrow it for $385.00 including return UPS shipping. The shafts were 450.00 including bearings. I went with the explorer bearings and rear disc kit.... the brakes are the same as a Jeep grand Cherokee which is a common mopar swap but with larger bearings.

I will have a total of 1200 in the rear with some upgrades listed below.

I am going to upgrade the ring, pinion, and 35 spline power lock to a dana 70, its 10.5" compared to the 60's 9.75. It is a 30% increase in strength for 200.00 extra. If anyone wants to know about the ring and pinion swap, I will recommend a google search for JANA76. Tim

double checked..........

double checked the tags on the truck Dana in my Coronet, it is a Dana 60, I knew I checked the numbers when I picked it up years ago, but you did have me second guessing myself. It's still a good option, just double check the application before you drop any money

Nothing to worry about BobC, Dodge didn't start using Chevy rear ends until 2003. They usually had a 14 bolt cover.
