A truck dana 80 might be 500 lbs, a car dana 60 sure aint.
HotRod (might have been car craft, Jeff Smith anyway)a few years back did a comparison between a dana 60, nine inch ford, and a twelve bolt chevy, all configured to the same width, and to bolt into a chevelle. They were testing for weight, and horsepower loss, on a dyno.
All three were configured with factory drum brakes. The dana was only 20 pounds heavier than the 12, and it was LIGHTER than the nine!!. (Very heavy factory brakes on the ford). Without brakes, the dana was about 20lbs more than the 12 or the nine. A long, LONG way from 500 lbs!
Almost forgot: the 12 bolt and the dana were a push as far as horsepower loss, the nine worse by about 2 to 5%
