Getting ready to paint the metal dash chassis on my '71 Charger. The original doesn't look quite flat, but who knows what has happened over the years! Non numbers matching car with lots of changes (no wood grains, carbon fiber pieces, etc...).
If you're going to use Rustoleum you may as well save some money and buy Behr Latex cause when it comes to quality of appearance their both in the same league. Now Duplicolor or SEM in a rattle can will give a fine finish with their fine spray molecules. Rustoleum belongs on watering cans and wheel barrows.I think I'm going to go with rattle can Rustoleum. It will wear good, just can't decide which finish will wear best. I hesitate against gloss because of scratches.
One thing to note regarding painting the dash frame, if armor all has ever been used on it, its going to be difficult to get paint to stick unless its taken all the way down to metal and an oil and wax remover is used on it.
The original type of paint was lacquer, with silver flake in it, here is what an original respray in black looks like and the texture is a bit rough.

The paint is still available from Instrument specialties. Here is the link. This is the paint

Yes, that is what it took to do my dash frame and glove box. Now, its key that you find someone that knows how to spray this stuff otherwise it will come out to rough.Think I would just need only a pint for a dash and Glove Box???
Don't discount a good powder coating job! Thousands of colors and textures are available, and it lasts a lot longer than paint if the job is done right. (P.S. I give FBBO members discounts << wink >>)
