Dash Removal And Resto Thread?

Hello, all!

One of my winter projects this year is to remove, clean, restore the rallye dash of my '70 Satellite, as well as install a "tic-tock tach" that I picked up this summer.

My problem? I'm clueless and have no real idea where to start, or how to proceed.

To that end, I'm wondering... I'm sure there's a good thread here that documents the removal of a rallye dash from a 1970 B-body...but I cannot find one. Does anyone have a link that I might find handy?

I pulled my rallye dash on my '68 charger and your '70 Satellite is similar. I can post some scanned instructions from my shop manual. I also took out my clock and installed a "tic-tock-tac", works great. Glad to help.
 
Dash removal

Here is a scanned image from my '68 shop manual. The resto manual says that a '70 Satellite uses a '70 Charger Rallye dash. Which is basically the same as my '68 rallye dash. Dodge and Plymouths were both B-bodies. One suggestion before disconnecting the wires. I labeled and numbered all my wires and made a key for referance. I was simple to re-attach all the wires etc. If you get stuck on the tick-tock-tach, might be able to help as I put one in my car.

I would also replace all the bulbs while you have it apart. They are available at the hardware or auto parts store. There is also a kit that includes the color disks for turn signals and brake warning light cover if they are too bad to restore. I would also remove the printed circuit board and check out the continuity and make sure all the contacts etc are clean. On the tach, there is one connector that powers the clock, same as the existing clock. Another wire I believe it's gray is the wire that runs thru the firewall and attaches to the negative (-) side of the coil. The last wire I think it is blue or red runs to your fuse box to power the tach. There are kits for this. Hope this helps.

With the previous picture, to take it apart, once its removed from the car, place it on its front and there are several phillips screws that is holding the front cover. Once the cover is off there are snap like revits that can be removed with needle nose pliers, and this will remove the long one piece plastic gauge lenses, now you can clean an polish it and have access to the gauges. It's pretty simple once you take it apart. Just reverse your steps to re-assemble.

It may be some help to you if I describe in a general sense the process the factory used to put it in the car. The dash frame was panted with a suede finish (very mild texture) and all the components were loaded into the frame while it was out of the car. This includes the wiring harness and all of the trim, etc.. Then the whole assembly was put in place and the loose ends like brackets and cables were fitted up. This is exactly how I did my 69 RR dash. You will need to remove the windshield to pull the dash but that may not be a bad thing since they tend to leak after this many years.
 
Major things that hold that dash in....6/7 small bolts on top front leading edge (under windshield seal), a bolt on each side into the hinge pillars and a bracket that bolts to the heater box. I found it very helpful to drop the column, pull the heater box and disconnect the main harness and obviously the speedo cable.

getting the windshield in and out is the worst part. dash is pretty easy after that.

Just out of curiousity, when I have the dash out, can I replace the bottom panel of my '70 dash with a '69 panel? I really want to have the ignition in the dash like the '69s, rather than in the steering column, which I eventually have to replace anyway, since I'm swapping my auto trans for a 4-speed.

Nice looking dash. I'm gonna make mine look like that hopefully(mines a 70 though). Did u buy a new pad or put a cover over it?
