Hey guys, can someone point me in the right direction for VIN/trim/paint/powertrain decoding info on 1964 Dodge 440 cars? Thanks!

Coding on tags from that era differed by plant. In order to decode the tag, you'll need to know at which plant the car was built.

Online decoders usually suck for that reason; they can not distinguish between plants.

A manual decode is usually more accurate. I can help if you want. Either post the picture and plant here or send it via e-mail.

Thanks! How can I tell via the tag which plant it was built at? Sold new in San Francisco, Ca, so I assume a west coast plant?

You might be able to tell from the tag by the way it is coded but the plant code is not on the actual tag.

Is the car still around? The VIN will tell you the plant.

If it starts:

6241=Lynch Road
6242=Hamtramck
6245=Los Angeles
6247=St. Louis

Once we know the plant, then we can start the decode.

If you do not know the plant, then post a picture and we'll see what we can do.

Bottom line: you have to know the plant to get an accurate decode for that year.

WTF???:edgy:

He waited almost 24 hours. For this board, that is 'patience'. :)

Thanks! Vin#6242141176 where the heck is Hamtramck?

Thanks for your help.

Hamtramck was Chrysler headquarters before Auburn Hills Mi. North Detroit.

If 69coronetrt hasn't chimed in via PM here are your trim and color code:

M1Y http://www.hamtramck-historical.com...rAndTrim/1964/64_Dodge_330_440_Polara0003.jpg

paint http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/paintChipCharts/_1964PaintChipCharts-01.shtml?load_img=8

my guess the zzw was a two tone anniversary gold and white.

The first 4 digits in the VIN are as follows;
6= Dodge 8 cyl
2= medium (trim package 440 category)
4= 1964
2= Detroit---Dodge

the remaining 6 are the unique VIN number

I thought I had the body decode too but can't seem to find it right now. someone else will fill in the blanks or if i find the info i'll post.

Great, appreciate your help guys! The car indeed is gold/white. I was hoping to confirm it is a "Golden Anniversary" if that can be confirmed and if it has any signifigance, and to confirm it was born with the 383/A833 drivetrain it has. Thanks!

All '64s were golden anniversary. The 440 has it badged in the center medallion of the steering wheel.. The 330 has a small ribbon around the steering wheel center hub. As far as the 383/manual???

Btw Fummins; have you recently purchased this car or just looking?

Thanks, recently purchased this car and just clarifying what the previous owner told me, he is 73 years old and his memory was a bit foggy The Golden Anniversary information is appreciated. The 383/4spd was special ordered according to the po. The motors casting # confirms a 1964 383 "B"

I am also the owner of a 50th anniversary Dodge. Polara 383/A833 4 speed. Bought from the original owner with all documentation from the order sheet on.

Right now its sitting in the driveway waiting to go in the garage for a complete redo. Will be building a "What If" car. What if Dodge had a model between the 426 Street Wedge and the Max Wedge. Will get started on it this summer.
