I sold my spare big block 727 to a guy who wanted to use it to replace a 727 that was on a 383 installed in a 67 GTX. He called me and said the mounting holes on my tranny were about an inch further apart than the holes on his engine and his old tranny.

I thought there were only small block and big block bell housings, and that the 383/400 engines used the big block housing. Is this correct or is there a different housing for a 383 that I've never heard of?

I would love be a fly on the wall in some garages. There is only the big block and small block bellhousing. Either he has a small block and doesnt know it, or he is smoking some potent stuff. Or both.

Yup, small block vs big block. Even the 426 Hemi shares the same BB bolt pattern....

Easy to tell the difference too...SB 727 has an extra bolt hole in the center of the bell housing as does the rear of a small block engine. BB does not have this extra hole...

Of course there's always the possibility that someone sold you a small block trans and either got it over on you, or didn't know.

I've had more than one person try to sell me a small block electronic distributor, claiming it was a big block unit.
Actually kind of common on ebay.

Another possibility is that the new owner might be trying to pull a fast one.
I've seen that happen more than once, as well.

Gee a scam in the MOPAR world.... no way....

...or the new owner was looking for a trans to go behind his 383 stroked chevy 350, because everyone knows all 383s are just stroked 350s!

Or he was putting it in and didn't have it high enough....not that that has ever happened to me at 3 am and a few beers....lol. misspent youth, my friend and I trying to get the car running again to hit Saturday night Napa cruise, as I had torched it Friday evening.....didn't notice at first that it was about an inch low.
