Ok, so I just picked up a 340 from 1969... or so I thought. The cast date on the passenger side of the block plainly shows "7-11-69". Easy enough. However, when I examine the serial number on the front of the block - just below the driver's side head, is says: _ _ 340P3392_ _. All indications are that 3392 equates to a November 10, 1970 build date. AND... under all the built up grime is orange paint (obviously the 1970-71 color). What am I missing??

....I don't suppose that block was cast, sat on a shelf for 16 months, and then was assembled as a complete engine in November 1970?

According to the advertisement, my recent 340 purchase was supposed to have been a 1971. Casting date is 8/71 or 9/71 (hard to read) and according to serial number on the oil pain rail it was assembled for the 1973 model year (first digit is "3").

Yep, the VIN is for a 71 model year car. Also, the first digit in the serial number stamped on the front of the block... is a "G". That confirms a 1971 model. So, I guess the block did sit on a shelf for 16 months. Looks like yours too, Dibbons. I guess it happens.
