Bolt connection at firewall.jpgPic looking at steering box and coupling.jpgSteering Box3.jpgHello All,

Here's the issue.

Had the car up on a hoist the other day to check the front end components. All seemed fine until my neighbor started to rock the left front tire back and forth, that's when we noticed movement. Upon further inspection all the linkage between the right and left side move together (i think that's a good thing), what we did find was movement in the shaft the comes out of the steering gear box and mounts to the pitman arm. The shaft seems to wobble where it enters the box. I assume there should be no movement what so ever here.

My question is, can this be repaired with a seal kit (while the box is still in the car), or does the steering gear box need to be removed and sent out for a rebuild? Also, if it needs to be removed, can I just remove the two bolts (see photo) from the steering shaft up at the firewall, or does the steering column inside the car need to be dropped? I don't see why anything inside the car needs to be disturbed.

The other part I don't understand is the removal of the Body Steering Column Shaft Coupling. I know there is a pin you need to remove but the small pin? in the photo feels like it's made of plastic.

All you help is greatly appreciated.

The roll pin gets punched out. but I'd adjust the box in the car before doing anything.
