Most likely because you can't even if you wanted to.

This article is very sobering...

but while they tried to do a thorough job there were some pretty glaring omissions. Most notably the giant foot the feds in concert with the enviro-nazis shoved up Detriot's a$$ in the early 70's and continue to do so today (CAFE standards, etc...) in one form or another that contributed to the destruction of this once great city.

Yup...OUR politicians have been 'fixing' our economy for a long time! And I'm sick of the political games these morons are playing with OUR money.

The artical was good and very sad... but in reality Roosevelts New Deal actually prolonged the depression 8 years longer than it should have. How ever we do have some nice bridges and a wonderfull damn in Nevada/Arizona because of FDR.

I read nothing about the unions going from protecting workers to becoming greedy trying to justify there existance by demanding free health car for all and 10 weeks vacation for their workers.
I read nothing about Clinton signing NAFTA and allowing jobs to ship out of the country and get a tast of cheap labor.

I didn't rean anything about the DAMN EPA hounding our industry into the ground.

As far as the slums in Detroit, maybe they should look at the current welfar system that allows people to live off the system in their government paid home all while having a wonderful career in the distribution and use of modern chemistry.. If these people were working then you would have a lot less blight and crime

Just my opinion... Thanks for the link.

KD, if you go back about 30+ years, you might find a deal that the GM brass made to the union and not the union trying to put a noose on GM. The MANAGEMENT sweetened up the deal for way better retirement and health care etc...over and above what the union was asking for. What they were up to in doing that was they knew that Ford and especially Chrysler at the time would have a hard time following suit for their members. GM was trying to put the hurt to them. That's a simplified version. I had heard about this in the 70's because I was working at a steel mill at the time and belonged to the United Steel Workers union....which had a no strike clause in the contract btw. At least our local did so I assume the rest of the USW did too? I'm not against unions but I have tried my best to keep them within reason. When I moved on to working for Exxon as a machinist, I use to lobby against going on strike whenever that kind of talk come up and in the 26 years that I worked there, we never had one. Btw, several years back, I got into a discussion about the sweet GM deal they laid on their union and I actually found some info on the net about it but I can't find it now. Apparently, the USW got the same deal that the UAW did or close to it but I don't remember getting that kind of a deal since I wasn't very active with the union back then. I did learn that strikes are not constructive at all for anyone....

I consider myself lucky to live in OKC. (It not perfect by any means)
The last 10 years the city planners and voting public have successfully passed several tax raising developing projects. The result has paid us back 10 fold. We now got rid of the abandon buildings and built an area in the heart of the city that attracts thousands of people to come enjoy themselves, and it has encourage business to move into our area creating more job opportunities.

The city and community has lost some major industry (GM plant for one) that has created a job shortage, but instead of letting the city fall to ruins, the city officials worked to lobby other job making industry to open shop here.

It depressing to say the least to what has happened to Detriot, as well as other once major manufacting cities the last 30 - 40 years.

I would tend agree with you...

You know I don't have a problem with people being able to make a good living with union labor or the right to work states that are trying to revive many industries that can't afford to do business in the current state of "Union leaders greed" (not the workers) especially when the tax payers are having to bail them out a couple of time now... The unions have so much power with lobby power & donations to political campaigns, especially to liberals, when I was a union guy for 10+ years, I would always vote "no for blanket donations to political parties", I would ask why are you using our pension funds for political gain?...JMO

Can you say too many Govt. Regulations...

That was quite the article. I have personally noticed that America is slowly turning into a shopping mall and a bed and breakfast while the rest of the world builds stuff. You can't have an economy without industry. It's absolutely disgusting what has happened to Detroit and the rest of this country.

I'll have to throw my 2 cents in on the unions. I work at a USW plant and it seems that the two are always butting heads. The union says they are trying to get us all that we are entitled to and the company side says the union won't bend. I've never been a fan of unions, and the things the union here has done is enough to prove that it's all political. I've seen people get away with murder and the union fought hard to get their job back and then let others suffer and do without. Years ago, the unions fought for workers rights. Now it's all for greed.

Cranky,

I've never heard that about GM, however it doesn't surprise me. I'll bet that's when the Job's bank came into play... you know where a worker whose job was done away with can come in and set in the lounge all day while making full pay to do nothing.

Budnicks, I agree you can't blame union workers for what their comp plan is. However when I see what took place in Wisconsin this past winter I really lost a lot of respect for a lot of union members (not all!) When I seen those union employees marching and chanting along side people who were holding communist part signs and people carrying SDS signs my head wanted to explode. I lost a lot of respect for the union workers who I always felt were true blue Americans.

ChrisD, you make a good point about the union fighting to get peoples job's back. I wonder what's going to happen to the Chrysler employees who got cought drinking and smoking dope in the parking lot?

Back to Detroit. You know another thing people don't talk about, is the Taxes in Michigan, especially in Detroit. Why are the taxes high??? Because all the damn social programs. Plus they need to make up for all the people who are not paying taxes in Detriot.
So if you had a business or were going to open a business you would probably look at a state like Texas where there are little to no taxes compared to Michigan.

OH YHA DID I MENTION THE FREAKING EPA!!!! LOL

There was an article about them and it said they fired 15 employees over this it was on the fox news site.

Yeah, not sure when the jobs bank came in but you're probably right. It's been a few years since reading about that 'sweetened' labor deal. And I wanted to explode too! And yes, Texas is decent to business owners but it's not as nice as it was several years ago. Taxes hasn't gone up much but the 'fees ' have. Permitting has become a nightmare. One of the items that's new is the 'key lock box' that you have to have by the front door now. It's not cheap and now the city has access to your shop.....just in case of fire etc they say. Also even tho we don't have an income tax, our state, city and county sales tax is nearly 9% and my property tax on a modest home (under 1800 sq ft) on a 1/2 acre is right at 3000 bucks!

Were making a come-back.
Says who? So far, it's been a jobless recovery. So far, the number of jobs that have come back is no where near what's been lost.
