I got my new driveshaft in the car today and I have 1.75 inches sticking out of the Tail shaft of my transmission
is this too far out?

What's important is how far it sticks out after bottoming it in the transmission. Should back out no more than 1". Actually my drive shaft shop likes to bottom the yolk and back it out 3/4", but he said 1" is okay too..

If it had a seal with the "boot" on it, would it seem so far out? That said it does seem a little more out than normal. I agree with pushing it all the way in and measuring how far "out" it actually is. My .02 cents only. jess

I think it looks correct, considering the seal does not have a dust boot.

I think I would unbolt the rear straps/u-bolts and slide it all the way in. Make a sharpie mark on the yoke at the edge of the tailshaft and then bolt the driveshaft back to the rear yoke, and measure to the mark, just to be sure. With the weight on the suspension of course.

Fran your picture helped
I had found another measurement while surfing the net that said the U-joint center should be at 3.75 inches from the Tail shaft
your picture shows this as welll and I measured mine at 3.75 inches
So it appears I am in good shape and I was worrying too much

I sure hope it's right.:praying:
if you used my measurement that I gave and it was off I would be very upset with myself.:cursin:

I had a Dana in my car for 35 years. Put the 8.75 back in had 2- 66 drive shafts, one was an inch longer. Put the longer one in looked OK but after reading posts here looked in SM wrong one. Should have realized it out, longer one came from a 66 Charger.

We are going to drop the driveshaft tonight and remeasure
However I am certain now that what I have is correct
As Fran Blocker pointed out the shaft sticks out of the Transmission 1 inch
My Slip yoke is sticking out 1.75 meaning there is roughly 3/4 of an inch inside the slip yoke for movement (plus any extra room there may be inside the yoke)

Okay we dropped the driveshaft today and pushed it all the way in
it still had machined surface showing at about .5 inch
So my actually travel room is just about 1 inch
This should be good to go
Thank you all that helped me work through this
