Hey all

i finally got an exhUst system put on the 69 coronet
i fully restored the car but did nothing with rear axle

i thought my diff gasket on the 8 3/4 rear end was leaking but it looks like the pinion seal is the culprit
i have been driving it more and now am hearing a definite
humming coming from the rear end

any thoughts?

i am going to get my prop shaft blasted and painted
i will also have the u joints rebuilt and the pinion seal
replaced but want to know more about the humming
i am also curious about the vent on the differentials
whats it for and how do u ensure its functioning

thx
Mark

have you checked the fluid level to make sure you are not running low because of your leak?

67 Coronet,

no....I was going to start there....

could that be it?

thanks,

Mark

Your noise could be a vibration, it could be a bearing and it could be a set up issue. If your oil is low and that caused the noise then something went bad.

The vent simply vents the heat as it builds up, if it doesn't vent then it pushes past the seals

Thats what your noise can be and your vent does

X2 above - except the vent is to blow off pressure from the heated fluid, which I'm sure is what he meant.

Thanks guys....I really appreciate the help....

I checked the diff oil today....I could not feel anything with my finger, and there were no drips on the garage floor....so I figured it was low.....

I filled it up with gear oil.....and drove it around the block.....the humming is still there....
I also noticed that there is a leak coming from my rear drivers side wheel....it is black and oily....not sure what it is...but I think my rear axle seal on that side is shot....

any further thoughts?

I also hear a rubbing from the pax side....not sure if it's the front or back....but it sounds like something is rubbing....I jacked car up and rotated tire....I felt a bit of resistance....I rotated the other side, and it rotated more freely......

what do you think?

thanks again....

Mark

the oil from the wheel is prob the axle seal, you will need to pull the drum and see if the shoes got contaminated with oil.change them if they did.dragging is prob a brake issue, pull the drum on that side and see if it goes away.if it does, then you have a brake problem.if it is still there and nothing is rubbing, then its prob the axle bearing on that side.could be your diff noise.

...I would change the oil... with 75W140 ...fix the seals also. And don´t forget to add 1 bottle of friction modifier ( if you are runnin a sure grip LSD )
