Duralast Water Pump Quality Issue

I went to install a new production Duralast water pump on my 440, and after I tightened the bolts down I could barely turn the pump, and when I did I was hearing scraping.

I pulled the pump off and sprayed some engine enamel inside the housing and placed the pump on by hand and turned it several times. I took the pump off and there was paint on the very end of just one impeller vane. I ground the end of the vane a bit and reinstalled and it worked fine.

So if you buy a Duralast pump you might want to check the vanes for any excess metal before installing.

It should break in after about 500 miles lol

Its the new interference fit that self seats itself for more efficent pumping! HAHAHAHA

Did you use a gasket or just RTV? Duralast.....isn't that an Autozone product?

Same thing happened with mine,there were wear marks on the impeller and the housing. My restoration guy said to stick with a NAPA part.

The problem isn't China. The problem is retailers that buy in China without providing the necessary blue prints and specifications required to make a good part. Keep in mind iPhones are made in China. The seller also needs to know how to check the parts they're selling to make sure they are good. NAPA has an engineering department that knows how to spec and check parts. Many of the retailers don't have this expertise and they buy on price and price alone. Cheap or good, pick one.
