Not exactly. Unless you have replaced the ignition system with something which eliminates the ballast, hooking to the coil+ is NOT 12V. If you are running capacitive discharge (like MSD) coil + isn't 12V either
There are only two switched 12V sources:
The switched accessory feed comes from the ign switch, goes to the acc buss in the fuse box. If you tap into the acc, the gauges will have power in "run" as well as accessory. Not a big deal for many guys
But ignition, has only one. The "ignition run" (IGN 1) or dark blue, comes from the ign switch, feeds power to the cluster, and then branches off out through the bulkhead to feed ignition, regulator, and on 70/ later cars, the alternator field and other things
If you want that, I see no reason to "go out" into the engine bay to get to it. You can splice in where the dark blue comes off the IGN switch. One place you can access that is right near the switch, or on column lock cars, pull the trim under the column But
BEWARE
This is an UN fused circuit. It would be wise to put a small inline fuse in there
