I received an original engine harness today for my 63 Dodge 440. The original harness that is in the car has a heavy red and black that screws onto the bulkhead block. The replacement harness which is 100% intact does not have the heavy red wire but it does have the heavy black wire. Anyone have a 63 Dodge that can take a look at theirs or knows what should be there?

From factory manual: In center of bulkhead connector from engine side: 12ga. Black from alternator (bottom) and 12 ga Red to top post on starter relay. This is from my 63 Plymouth manual but it should be the same.

Scanned pages. Hope they help.

Thanks Dave but I am baffeled as to where the red wire went. The harness is complete and has all the original coverings and nothing has been cut off.

So do I remove the red wire from my old harness and install it in the replacement? What do I do with the wire that was on the replacement that is wired into the block?

The first photo shows what came with the car...red and purple wire on one connector to the starter relay.

Second photo shows the red and black wire that attaches to the bulkhead block

Third photo shows the replacement original harness end at the starter relay...notice the one heavy gauge purple wire and no red.

Forth photo shows the bulkhead connector with only a black wire.

As far as I can see the harness has not been cut or retaped. I think its also important to note that my car originally had A/C which may account for at least one extra wire for the compressor clutch. So the question remains....do I remove the red and purple wire from the original harness, trim off the purple wire and add it to the replacement harness or what? Is there a way that the purple wire in the replacement harness could be getting voltage from the battery without there being a red wire connected to the bulkhead block? Need some help here guys.....

Well Duh.......if you look at the connector where it plugs into the bulkhead you will see that they are two different configurations. Both are a 6 space BUT one is small and one is longer...ah, wrong harness ya think?

The colors of wire on your original harness are different from the Plymouth. Hopefully someone has the electrical diagrams for your Dodge and can post them. Who knew?

Just for shits and giggles....could I swap the plugs out? Here is the diagram for a 63 Polara

I down loaded schematics for both cars and switched the wires out one at a time. Added the short jumper from my other harness and the red wire...should be good to go...!

As long as the 12ga. red and black wires labeled 'A' and 'B' on your diagram go to the amp gauge (one on each side) you should be OK. What short jumper wire are you referring to?

On the 64 harness there is a yellow wire for the starter solenoid that is part of the main plug and can be seen in the photos, on the 63 that wire plugs into a socket on the side of the main bulkhead block by itself (Marked "S" on the 63 Dodge schematic). The wire is about 12 inches long so I removed that wire from the 64 harness (male one end and female the other end) and replaced it with the same wire from the 63 harness (female connectors both ends). That wire is labeled S-2 on your 63 Plymouth schematic.

OK. That S-2 is an 18ga. yellow wire that goes from the right bottom terminal (ST) on the relay to a connector on the bulkhead. It then goes from the bulkhead to the ST terminal on the ignition switch. It functions to energize the relay / starter.

This is after the switch to the other plug...notice the yellow wire with the broken insulation. I will also mention that as each spade was removed it was cleaned and coated with dielectric grease before it was installed in the new plug.

A/C compressor wires were not incorporated in the engine harness.Picture shows A/C wire in cavity you show empty on top plug bottom row middle.Second shot is how wire ran parallel to harness.
