Nope! The ballast resistor is there to protect the coil, with either points or electronic ignition. Some coils (MSD) need a different value resistor, and some coils (Pertronix Flamethrower) want the resistor completely bypassed. Best to follow coil manufacturer's instructions on ballast resistors.

Car won't start ? If its electronic try running a jumper across the ballast connectors. If it is bad, the car should start.
