This is on a 63 Plymouth Bel , here's the question , how does the cable come out of the transmission cross member , want to keep cable . Thanks
 
Never had a problem getting one out but never worked on a 65 or older car.....is the head end smaller than the tail end?
 
There is a small clip on the rear facing side.
I lost mine.Used a fuel line clamp (Red)

It's a spring clip similar to the one used on the e-brake at the backing plate. Give it a pull.

The clamp under the floor should be enough to hold it into the cross member.
