I've did the search on the type of paint to use in the engine bay and couldn't find a clear answer. The bay is primed and ready for color. Will bc/cc hold up in the bay or should I use a single stage paint?

Well the original paint was a single stage enamel, but almost everyone that repaint uses a bc/cc, so I'm sure it'll be fine.

I read your posts regarding the painting of your car....you did it your self as I recall is that correct? It look great!

Base coat clear coat is what you want to do if that is what is on the body. it will hold up better than original.
infact you can use single stage body paint to paint the engine (with a good sealer under the pant) and it holds up better than the spray boms and will keep the gloss... i have done this many times.

Is it practical to use a single stage paint in the engine bay and then a bc/cc on the car itself. Will the colors look the same? I know it best to use bc/cc on all but it could be cheaper and easier to use single stage. It could for me and maybe others be a long time between engine bay and body paint. So what does everyone think, am I crazy or stupid?

I have seen a car with single stage in the engine bay and inside the trunk with base/clear on the rest of the car. I was easily able to tell. The base/clear had a much deeper look to it, but it could've been the color.

I personally use bc/cc on almost everything.Durability is a big factor in the engie compartment.Another issue is if you damage the finish.BC/CC is easily repaired with little to no visual detections if done properly.Single stage can be spotted also, much more difficult.Usually end up with a visual repair depending on the color. If you are spraying a metalic color BC/CC is much easier in an engine bay,in my opinion.

Thanls guys. I am only asking because it will be quite a long time to get the car painted but my engine bay is about ready to paint. My frontend is all rebuilt, engine and trans all complete and ready to go in. My car is a long way from being done as it is torn completely apart and I am making no progress due to not having any $$$$$. I am just looking for something that I can do cheap but not screw up the quality of what I am doing.

If you BC/CC I use shop line products by PPG.A quart of JC660 clear and hardner will run you maybe $50 max.Base color depends on color, you shouldn't need more than a pint. That also depends on color. The JC660 is a spot/panel clear, but works real well for engine bays.I just sprayed mine with it.Sealer/primer JP202,it will run you around $100 a gallon with all the fixings. It can be used as a primer and a sealer depending on the mix.Works well and holds up over time.

I did my Barracuda with single stage under the hood, and bc/cc on the car. Same color code, but two different colors.

Engine bay paint

I just painted my undercarriage and engine bay with 5.0 VOC DuPont IMRON. You can use it as a single stage, or put clear on top of it for a "wet" look. It is virtually indestructable, and does not discolor from oil or gasoline. It isn't cheap, but paint stripper won't touch it and it looks great forever! Good luck! Like to see some pic's when you're done.
