Here is the serial number i have off the block 4006630 440-9,from what I taking from this is it is out of a 79. any other help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks,jeff

That would be the casting number. On the pass side by the mount tabs is the casting date. The "9" means it was the 9th casting of that mold. On the top in front of the intake is a pad with stampings. There will be the motor assy date, model year and any special codes for that motor. On the pass side right above the oil pan is another pad that will have the last 8 digits of the vehicle's serial from which the motor came from. If the 2 pads are blank then its a replacement block. 78 was the last year for the big block.

Yup, 78 was the last year for big block castings but a very few 79 model vehicles got one....very few.

Yep very few. Seen a couple 79 motorhomes with a 440. I was just guessing that he though the 9 was for 1979.
