I've heard a bunch of different ways to paint an engine but never did it. Anyone know the best way from prepping to painting and what brand of paint or primer to use?
I use POR-15's Engine enamels. No need for primer. I've done a 440 and my present 383 with this stuff and both came out well. You can spray it or brush it. When brushed it will smooth out and look excellent. It is impervious to gas, oil and solvents when dried. The only thing I have found that will lift it off is DOT3 brake fluid or PS/trans fluid.
The stuff is 80% solids so it needs to be thinned for spraying and will take 6 days to fully dry. Once dry it is magnificent. I've attached a pic. The valve covers were sprayed with a disposable sprayer (available at Sherwin Williams stores) and the rest was brushed on.
