I have an early 70's 440 engine and 727 transmission. I plan to swap them into my '65 Belvedere. What do I need to keep the column shift with this conversion? Any other additional information would be appreciated for this swap. Thanks

Surely someone has done this swap. I'm more concerned with keeping the column shift. Motor and trans mounts are not the issue. Is there a company that makes the cable for later 727 transmission? Thanks

I put a later 727 trans in my 65 but I have a floor shift & was able to adapt the cable/lever mechanism to work w/ the 67 trans. I'll outline the problem: 65 was a transition year. They used the old (64 & older) trans w/ cable shift incorporating a box at the end of the steering column that had the cable attached. The cable on those trans went directly into the trans w/ no external lever as on the 67 up trans. There is (or was) someone who made an adapter for the floor 65 console shift but I'm unaware of someone making one for the column shift. The 65 cable doesn't have enough travel to operate the lever on the later trans and the detent spring on the lever system is too strong for that older cable type. I fabricated my own for the console shift, wasn't hard. Column system would be difficult. Might research possibility of using a 66 column w/ your 65 column components. Columns are similar.
