I had incredible exhaust smell pouring into the car when the windows were down. When searching another post, I discovered a potential source of as being a gap in the trunk lid seal. This weekend, I put towels along the bottom lip of the trunk to fill the gap between the seam and the trunk lid. It seems to fix my issue.

When looking at the trunk lid (see pictures), it's clear the trunk lid appears to be too far back in relation to the other seams on the back, I have some room forward. Best plan of attack?

1. Try to pull the trunk lid down further by adjusting the latch.
2. Replace the seal with the right sized one from Dixie restorations it is the thick version.
3. Move the trunk forward to tighten the seam.
4. Combination of above.

Thoughts?

Tim

IF your seal is good I would vote for #3. If the seal is bad I would replace it with the correct seal and still go with #3.

looks as tho quarters may have been replaced and not lined up correctly being that the trunk line (gap) close to the rear window looks good. thicker trunk gasket will possibly fix your problem....if they make such an animal.

If you go too far forward (which won't be much) you're gonna be crowding the corners of the trunk lid into the quarter corners. I think that's what dog was talkin about in post #4. Good luck.

I have recently had the same issue (hint of exhaust in the car). I wondered about trunk seal. I will be taking a look at the trunk lid as well. Thanks!

Get a voluteer (could be you) to go inside the trunk in the daylight. You'll be able to see exactly where the gaps are. The adjust only what you have to.

Been there Done that...& your buddy doesn't let you out......After the laughing, your out........

LOL. Since most my friends have common sense and won't let me lock them in and I'm way too tall/big, I tested with Vaseline to "mark" the lip and found the bottom also to only show a small contact strip leading me to the towel treatment.

a small strip of foam tape can take up the extra space.by the look of your pics i dont think you can adjust that out.

crawled in there this weekend and saw the bottom corners near the bumper as having quite a big gap in them. Along the bottom seam it is also letting light through. Getting a new seal to see if I gain anything. it's not drivable right now without a headache at the end.

I put sheets of paper over the seal along the bottom then closed the trunk and pulled on each. Driver's side was snug while I could easily pull the passenger side out. Loosened the bolts on the passenger side hinge and slid it forward 1/16th to 1/8th inch and re-tightened. Haven't noticed any smell since. Good luck with yours!
